Four years ago, Mike Burroughs lost a friend. Some of you may know the story, others may not, but his BMW E28 (a.k.a. Rusty Slammington) was engulfed in flames during an unfortunate garage fire. I had followed this car since 2009 or so, and learning of this accidental viking funeral nearly had me in tears.
Initially, the forums and Mike’s social media pages were flooded with one question: “are you bringing Rusty back?” For a while, it seemed like the answer was a sullen ‘no,’ but I don’t think many of us truly believed Mike would let Rusty’s memory fade. After what felt like years, we got an update. It was a vague Stanceworks article that had little more than an image of Rusty’s signature shark mouth. The message was clear: Mike was bringing him back.
Not long after, we were greeted by a video. This was back in 2011. Not much else was known about the build, but those of us keeping an eye on Mike’s Instagram were given little (and I mean very little) teases as time went on. A video of Mike welding, a photo of Rust’s smile, a throwback post with a small hint at progress, but nothing more.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And finally, yesterday at SEMA, we finally got to see the face we have missed for so long. Rusty, in his newest form, took center stage at the H&R booth, dressed to impress. What makes this iteration so interesting?
Full blown rusted out race car spec.
His death made my heart sink, but his rebirth was worth the wait. I’m glad to see Rusty sitting on his own wheels again. He may not 100% finished yet, but what good project ever is?

How can anyone hate this?
You can’t.
You just can't.

This car is my absolute favorite build ever. They teased this basically never but the wait was totally worth it. And they worked hard to get it there and it’s such a mean looking car and I absolutely love how different they were and how willing they were to stand out.

I love, love, love this car. So happy to see it again, especially in such healthy form. Looks like it's not done yet though, no plug wires on that S38.

I’m so glad they brought it back but I really hope they sort out the front end. This doesn’t work at all for me. They should make it flow like a touring car.

Love the car but hate the rear wheels. that lip is way too big and they shoulda sourced staggered centers for the back

I love this build, love this car, so glad to see it back! Although I’m a bit shocked to see what looks like BMW power under the hood. Nothing wrong with that, but I love weird cross platform swaps, and thought the original 1JZ heart was such an odd choice for a car like this, that it was perfect!

Lots of people do. Especially in its previous form. Personally, I loved it but I’m just an idiot stance kid.

It took me longer than I’m willing to admit to get this. Ahaha

I see where you’re coming from, but Rusty has never been about epitomizing a flowing design. I think it fits his character pretty well the way it is.
I mean...

I was surprised to see a BMW heart too! But a fully built S38 with 14:1 compression is pretty crazy in its own right.

Me too! I this car has been my wallpaper countless times. I even read through all of the build threads which were lengthy to say the least. Definitely worth it though. Mike’s girlfriend noted that it’s not quite finished yet on her Instagram but it’s really close to being 100%. I can’t wait to see it move. It looks like it’ll go like a bat out of hell.

Eh, I don’t know. The sized up lip is something Mike does on almost all of his cars. I’d be honestly shocked to see a Burroughs build without it.
Also, I don’t know if those centers came any larger. Those are real Porsche 935 centers.

I have never been more psyched for something I will probably never get to see. I’ve been waiting for this for so long. Ahaha

The lack of teasers drove me crazy for a little bit, but you could definitely find some hints if you kept an eye out. Totally worth the wait. I flipped shit when I saw Mike’s first Instagram post. Say what you will about stance, but Mike knows how to do a car up right. His builds always leave me speechless.

sized up width wise sure but sizing up in diameter looks very stupid and likely doesn’t provide any larger space for brakes which is usually why race cars have big wheels.

I really hope this car gets a post on the front page. The comments section would be amazing.

Oh jesus, that would definitely be a comment section worth reading through. It really should get a front page article though. It’s by far the most interesting in SEMA that I’ve seen so far.

Stance is awesome.

Not according to almost everyone else on Oppositelock/Jalopnik. I love stance, but apparently stance is the devil and we should be ashamed to love it.
ASHAMED!

Yeah. People become less “it’s their car they can do what they want” when stance is involved. I don’t even care. I love it anyway.

True - Maybe if they just flared the corners out a bit more... The sides seem way lower than the front valence.
